Chartering a Private Catamaran: The Virgin Islands vs. Belize. Which Is Right for You?

Two incredible destinations, two very different experiences, and one unforgettable way to vacation.

Have you ever considered chartering your own private catamaran for a week?

I'm not talking about renting a boat for the afternoon. I'm talking about having your own beautiful floating villa, complete with a captain, private chef, comfortable cabins, and an itinerary designed around exactly what you want to do.

Wake up in a different beautiful bay each morning. Enjoy breakfast on deck, jump into crystal-clear water for a swim, explore a secluded beach, or simply relax with a book while your captain takes you to the next destination.

No crowded pools, no restaurant reservations, no packing and unpacking. And best of all, no fixed schedule you have to follow.

It's one of my favorite ways for couples, families, groups of friends, and even retreats to experience the Caribbean.

But here's something you might not realize. While the British Virgin Islands are one of the most popular destinations for private catamaran charters, Belize offers an entirely different experience that's equally worth considering.

So, which one is right for you?

The U.S.V.I/British Virgin Islands: Island Hopping, Beach Bars & Beautiful Bays

If you've never chartered a catamaran before, doing so through the U.S.V.I and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a wonderful place to start.

The islands are relatively close together, which means you can spend less time traveling between destinations and more time actually enjoying them.

One day you might be snorkeling around Norman Island, exploring the famous Baths at Virgin Gorda the next, and enjoying a Painkiller cocktail at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke the day after. Let's not forget about Cruz Bay shopping and the famous Beach Bar on St. John; Lime Out's fancy taco's and Pizza Pi, on the water, on the U.S.V.I. side.

There's a wonderful combination of lively beach bars, beautiful restaurants, quiet coves, and picturesque islands.

And that's what makes these two sides of the Virgin Islands so appealing. You can have a little bit of everything.

Want to spend the afternoon at a beach club? Absolutely. Prefer to anchor in a quiet bay and have your chef prepare dinner aboard? That's an option too.

Let's head over to the USVI side, where you won't need a passport, if you're an American.

If you're looking for a destination with beautiful beaches, fun places to stop, and plenty of opportunities to explore, the USVI is another fantastic option for a private catamaran charter.

One of the things I love about sailing around St. John and St. Thomas is that there are so many unique experiences you can enjoy right from the water.

Imagine pulling up to Lime Out, the famous floating taco bar in Coral Bay, St. John, where you can enjoy tacos and cocktails while sitting on floating lily pads in the Caribbean Sea.

Or how about stopping at Pizza Pi in Christmas Cove, near St. Thomas? Yes, you can actually order pizza from a floating pizzeria while spending the afternoon swimming and snorkeling!

Want something a little more upscale? Head over to Lovango Cay, where you can spend the day at the beautiful Lovango Resort & Beach Club. Think infinity pool, cabanas, waterfront dining, and gorgeous views. It's a wonderful place to gather with friends or multiple families for an afternoon.

And of course, there are the beaches.

St. John is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, including Trunk Bay, Maho Bay, and Cinnamon Bay. Picture swimming in that incredible turquoise water, snorkeling alongside sea turtles, or simply enjoying the scenery from your catamaran.

Over on St. Thomas, beautiful Magens Bay is another spot worth experiencing, with its long stretch of sand and calm, protected waters.

And don't forget Cruz Bay in St. John, where you can head ashore for shopping, waterfront restaurants, and a little island nightlife.

What makes the USVI especially appealing is the variety. You can spend one day exploring quiet bays and snorkeling, another enjoying a lively floating restaurant, and the next relaxing at a beautiful beach club.

Combine both sides for an unforgettable vacation.

The V.I.'s has a well-established yacht charter industry, with a wide selection of catamarans, and power boats, ranging from comfortable, casual vessels to some truly exceptional luxury yachts.

Who I'd recommend the USVI/BVI for:

Families chartering for the first time, groups of friends who enjoy socializing, couples looking for a mix of relaxation and activity, and anyone who wants to experience several different islands without long days at sea.

Belize: Incredible Snorkeling, Secluded Islands & a More Off-the-Beaten-Path Experience

Now, let's talk about Belize, because this is a destination I think more travelers should have on their radar.

Belize offers a completely different type of catamaran vacation.

Rather than hopping between islands with well-known beach bars and resorts, you'll spend much of your time exploring small tropical cayes, marine reserves, and the extraordinary Belize Barrier Reef.

Imagine waking up surrounded by turquoise water, with a tiny palm-covered island in the distance and very few other boats around.

The snorkeling here is exceptional, and for those who enjoy diving, fishing, marine life, and getting away from busy tourist areas, Belize is a fantastic choice.

Depending on your itinerary, you might explore South Water Caye, Tobacco Caye, the Pelican Cayes, or some of the beautiful waters around Placencia.

There's something wonderfully peaceful about Belize. It feels less developed as a charter destination, and that's part of its appeal.

And another advantage? Belize can offer excellent value, depending on the yacht, season, and what's included. For travelers who want a private, fully crewed experience without necessarily paying the rates associated with some of the Caribbean's more established luxury charter destinations, it's absolutely worth exploring.

Who I'd recommend Belize for:

Families who love being in the water, couples looking for privacy, groups who enjoy snorkeling and diving, and travelers who prefer natural beauty and quiet anchorages over busy beach bars and nightlife.

So, What's the Difference?

Both destinations offer gorgeous water, beautiful scenery, and the luxury of having your own private catamaran. But the overall experiences are quite different.

What Does a Fully Crewed Catamaran Charter Include?

This is where I think people are often surprised.

With the right fully crewed charter, so much of the vacation is already taken care of.

Your captain handles the navigation and plans the itinerary around your interests and the weather. Your chef prepares meals based on your preferences, and many yachts include beverages, snorkeling equipment, paddleboards, and other water toys.

You'll have your own private cabin and bathroom, along with shared spaces for dining, lounging, and enjoying the scenery.

Some charters are offered on an all-inclusive basis, while others charge separately for certain expenses, so it's important to understand exactly what's included before booking.

And while there are certainly very luxurious catamarans available, you don't necessarily need to charter a superyacht to have an incredible experience.

For a family or group of six to eight people, splitting the cost of a private yacht can make the experience more attainable than you might expect.

Which Destination Would I Choose?

That really depends on the type of vacation you're looking for.

If you love the idea of exploring different islands, stopping at fun beach bars, enjoying restaurants ashore, and having a little more activity around you, I'd lean toward the British Virgin Islands.

If you're dreaming of quiet anchorages, beautiful reefs, exceptional snorkeling, and spending more time enjoying nature and your own private yacht, Belize might be exactly what you're looking for.

Neither is better than the other. They're simply different.

And that's what I love about private yacht charters. No two vacations have to look the same.

Your Own Private Yacht Might Be More Attainable Than You Think

If you've always assumed a private catamaran charter was out of reach, it may be worth taking another look.

Whether you're celebrating a milestone birthday, planning a getaway with friends, or bringing the family together for a week, there are some wonderful options available at different price points.

At Your Wish Travel Co., yacht charters are one of our specialties. We work with trusted charter partners to match our clients with the right yacht, crew, and destination, taking into consideration everything from your budget and group size to the type of experience you want.

Because the right yacht is just as important as choosing the right destination.

So, which would you choose?

The lively islands and beach bars of the USVI/BVI, or the secluded cayes and incredible reefs of Belize?

Either way, imagine waking up tomorrow morning with nothing on your schedule but deciding where you'd like to swim next.

That's my kind of vacation.
